Imperial Cities and Desert Tour 11 Days

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Marrakech Airport

Welcome at the airport upon your arrival from  and transfer to the riad. Opportunity to have a first contact with the famous Jamaa el Fna square. Free dinner and overnight stay in the Riad.

Day 2 : Marrakech » Essaouira 

After breakfast Departure to Essaouira. After about 3 hours, you will reach the old port of Mogador, built by the Portuguese on a narrow peninsula with a huge crescent of fine sand. Perfectly protected by the imposing walls of the 18th century French palace, the city is largely pedestrian and is divided into several districts designed in a grid. From the top of the Skala you can see the colorful fishing port, the fortresses and the Spanish weapons. Essaouira is also famous for its handicrafts, especially fine objects of wood (your) interspersed with lemon wood, ebony, mother of pearl or silver or copper wire. If you like fish, you can enjoy a meal in the port. Dinner and overnight Riad.

Day 3: Essaouira » Casablanca » Rabat 

Today our destination is Rabat, the capital of Morocco. We reach it passing through the great commercial capital, Casablanca, where we plan to visit the Hassan II Mosque from the outside (this Mosque is one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims at certain times). We will continue our journey to Rabat where we will arrive in the afternoon: free time. Dinner and overnight in Riad. 

Day 4: Rabat » Chefchaouen

After breakfast we will visit the historic center, inside the Kasbah Oudaya, the Hassan II tower, the Mausoleum. After the visit of Rabat, we will move to Chefchaouen (more simply called Chaouen), the white and blue-mogador city, founded in 1471 and located in the cavity between two mountains (hence its name “ech-Chaoua”, the horns). Narrow and steep streets with white and indigo plastered buildings, small squares, beautifully decorated fountains and houses with richly embellished doors, together with red tile roofs, make it a delightful town. Chaouen is considered a “holy city” as it has eight mosques. Its original population was mainly composed of Andalusian exiles, both Muslims and Jews, which is why the old part of the city has an appearance very similar to that of Andalusian villages, with small streets with an irregular layout. The oldest part of the city was built on the upper part of the mountain where the sources of the Ras al-Ma river are also located. The center of the city corresponds to the square of Uta al-Hamman, where the fortress and a mosque with an octagonal base tower are located. The new city was built lower down. In the past, access to the city was forbidden to foreigners; it was the Spanish troops who opened Chaouen once they had taken control of the northern area of ​​Morocco to establish their protectorate. Day 5: Chefchaouen » Volubilis » Meknes 

After breakfast we will leave for Meknes, stopping for a visit to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Volubilis was founded by the Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC and dominated by the Romans from 40 AD. After this visit, we move to Meknes, upon arrival we meet with the local guide to begin the visit, the visit of this city will begin by crossing Bab Mansour, the most important and notable of the gates of Meknes. From here to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, where appropriate clothing is required. From here to the granaries Hri Moulay Ismail; this grain storage is the most important monument of the imperial city, built with walls of beaten clay mixed with stones and straw (pisé). We will then enter the heart of the medina crossing the El-Hedim square visiting the market and the souks From Meknes. Dinner and overnight in  Riad.

Day 6: Meknes » FES

After breakfast we move to Fes, upon arrival we meet with the guide for the visit to the medina, the most famous of the imperial cities after Marrakech. We begin the visit of the old city of Fes (Fès el-Bali) and its medina, the largest and most famous in the entire Arab world, entering from Bab Boujloud, the most important gate and heading towards Dar Batha, a Hispanic-Moorish building that houses a beautiful museum of popular art. We then continue with the visit of the Bou Inania madrasa, the Koranic school of Fes, where the young people studied the Koran among rooms, oratory and a magnificent patio. The visit then continues through the Chouara tannery, to discover the fascinating system of leather processing, from the first cleaning of the hair to the coloring with natural dyes. We then pass by the Qaraouiyine mosque, founded in the 9th century by a woman. The city tour ends by passing through Beffarne square, where brass makers and coppersmiths populate the square and adjacent streets. Dinner and overnight stay in  a Riad.

Day 7: Fes   »  Ifran   »   Midelt   »  Ziz Valley  »  Merzouga Desert

After breakfast we will leave for Ifrane, an exceptional site at 1650 m, nicknamed the ”Switzerland of Morocco” where you can admire the storks that nest on the roofs of the houses. Afterwards we will take a walk in Ifrane and then we will leave towards Merzouga, in the Sahara desert. The first village we will encounter along the road is Azrou, of Berber origin, located in the heart of a natural park of 53,000 hectares on a limestone plateau bordered by cedar and holm oak forests, in the middle of ancient volcanoes. Azrou is also very famous for the presence of many monkeys in the forest that surrounds it. We will then take the road that climbs the Middle Atlas to the Zad pass and the town of Midelt at 1488 m above sea level. Midelt is not a particularly touristic place but famous from a geological point of view with very colorful and amazing crystalline structures. Here you can stop for lunch. From Midelt the road continues through the beautiful Ziz gorges until reaching Er-Rachidia, in the southern province. You then arrive in Rissani, the door to the desert and from here to Merzouga. Arrival in the afternoon, after a break we will take the camels to go to the desert, it will be a magical night with a clear sky and the stars that shine with intensity. If we are lucky we will also be able to see the Milky Way. For the first night a beautiful typical dinner is planned around the fire with a party to the rhythm of the drums, singing the songs of the Berbers, the Tuareg and the populations of southern Morocco. (the night in the Desert in a tented camp).

Day 8 : Merzouga Desert » Rissani » Todra Gorges » Dades Valley

Wake up early in the morning to see the sunrise and the different colors of the dunes compared to those of the sunset. We will then return to the hotel always on the back of the camel, we will take the car and leave for Rissani, it was once the economic capital of Morocco and the center of the caravans leaving for the desert. We will then visit the Kasbahs of this town. We will take the road to the Todra Gorges, where the film Lawrence of Arabia was shot, among the most beautiful in southern Morocco. Here we will also stop for lunch and from here towards Boumalne Dades from where the valley of the same name begins, 25 km long that reaches the gorges, where we will take a walk in the middle of the lush and green vegetation in contrast with the surrounding red rock, and where the rammed earth buildings take on the same color as the rocks. Along this valley there is a succession of ksour, in the heart of cultivated fields and orchards. From here we continue on to the valley of roses. Here we will stop to spend the night in the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Hotel Kasbah.

Day 9: Dades Valley » Skoura » Ouarzazate » Ksar Ait Ben Haddou » Marrakech 

After breakfast, we continue to the valley of roses, taking the road of the 1000 kasbahs, the typical buildings of southern Morocco. We will stop in the main city of this valley, El-Kalaa M’Gouna, famous for the flowering of this flower from which many body care products are obtained. We will also visit a laboratory for the extraction of this precious essence. From here we head towards Skoura and Ouarzazate to visit the kasbah of Taourirt, It forms a complex superposition of walls and crenellated towers that form a real fortification.
It is also said that it was one of the most beautiful kasbahs in Morocco, its host, the Glaoui or pasha of Marrakech,

We will then continue to Ksar Ait Benhaddou, visit to the Ksar or (kasbah) declared a world heritage site by UNESCO and which has been the setting for the filming of films such as Gladiator, Babel, Lawrence of Arabia, The Legionnaire, The Sheltering Sky and many others. Lunch on site and then continue to Marrakech via the port of Tizi-n-Tichka (2260m) in the High Atlas Mountains. Along our way, we will see impressive landscapes, the colors of the earth that change and wonderful villages and Berber people who live in the mountains. Arrival in Marrakech free dinner and overnight in Riad.

Day 10: Marrakech

After breakfast visit the city of Marrakech. Of greatest interest is the old part of the city with its Medina, its main historic buildings: the Medersa Ali Ben Youssef, the El-Badi palace, the covered souk where we can admire every form of craftsmanship, textiles, wrought iron, wool coloring, woodworking, leather, ceramics, silver … The large Jemaa el-Fna square, an open-air stage where small entertainment and various curiosities take place at any time of the day … the Koutoubia Mosque, the Majorelle Gardens, a small oasis of plants cultivated with extreme care, inside you can visit the permanent museum of Berber culture. Free dinner and overnight stay in a Riad.

Day 11 : Marrakech Visit  » Airport 

Breakfast in the Riad and free time until departure time for the airport.
